‎World football’s governing body, FIFA, has launched a formal inquiry into claims of racial abuse directed at American online content creator IShowSpeed during the Round of 32 fixture between Argentina and Cape Verde at Miami Stadium on July 3.

‎The investigation was confirmed on Tuesday through FIFA’s official X account after videos of the incident circulated widely on social media.

‎In its statement, FIFA denounced all forms of racism, hatred and discrimination, declaring that such conduct is unacceptable in football and society.

‎The organisation said it became aware of an altercation involving a spectator and the livestreamer during the World Cup encounter and acted immediately by opening an investigation.

‎FIFA also reiterated that the tournament is intended to promote unity among people of different cultures, nationalities and backgrounds, adding that individuals whose actions undermine those values have no place in the sport.

‎The incident unfolded while IShowSpeed was broadcasting live from the stands, dressed in a Cape Verde national team jersey.

‎Footage shared online appeared to show a fan wearing an Argentina shirt hurling offensive comments at the internet personality, including a remark telling him to “go cry to the zoo.”

‎Other eyewitness accounts also alleged that racial insults were shouted during the confrontation.

‎Separate videos from the Argentina versus Egypt match also showed another spectator making monkey gestures in the direction of the streamer, prompting further outrage online.

‎As of Tuesday, neither IShowSpeed nor members of his management team had issued a public response to the allegations, according to the Associated Press.
