Ghana’s Minister for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, has been praised by the country’s capital Onion Sellers and Importers Cooperative Society and the Cross Border Women Traders Association for her prompt efforts to settle the recent disagreement involving onion merchants from Ghana and Nigeria.
Their response comes after Nigeria’s National Onion Producers and Marketers Association lifted its temporary halt on shipments to Ghana, allowing the movement of the commodity between the two West African neighbours to resume.
The cooperative, which brings together five prominent onion trading groups, including associations based in the country’s capital, Accra, Adjei Kotoku and Dominanse in the Central Region, said the minister and her team acted quickly by engaging affected parties and seeking a solution to their concerns.
During discussions in Accra on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, with Ghanaian and Nigerian representatives present, Ms Ofosu-Adjare urged both sides to bring the disagreement to an end.
She stressed that maintaining cordial commercial ties between Ghana and Nigeria was essential to expanding economic partnerships across the ECOWAS region.
The minister further encouraged the various parties to set aside their grievances and pursue arrangements that would provide a dependable and beneficial trading system.
She warned that continued restrictions on onion supplies could have serious consequences for producers, merchants, haulage companies and consumers in both countries.
The Public Relations Officer of the Accra Onion Sellers and Importers Cooperative Society, Osman Mohammed, confirmed that four Ghanaian vehicles conveying onions from Nigeria had been freed by Thursday, August 13.
The organisation also disclosed that Nigerian haulage trucks already in Ghana had successfully discharged their consignments at markets in different parts of the country.
The traders welcomed the development, expressing optimism that the government-led engagement would deliver a permanent resolution while deepening cooperation between business communities in Ghana and Nigeria.
They added that restoring uninterrupted onion commerce would support agricultural exchange and contribute to stronger economic integration across the ECOWAS bloc.
