Tragic Plane Crash Claims Eleven Lives in Eastern France/ Image@ BBC
A civilian aircraft carrying skydivers has tragically crashed in Tomblaine, eastern France, resulting in the deaths of all eleven individuals on board, including the pilot and ten passengers.
Among the deceased were five instructors and five first-time skydivers.
The aircraft, operated by a parachuting school, took off from Nancy-Essey airfield before the incident occurred at approximately 11:00 local time (10:00 BST).
In response to the disaster, the Paris prosecutor’s office has initiated an investigation to determine the cause of the crash, as confirmed by French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez.
Disturbingly, some relatives of the victims witnessed the crash while gathered at the airfield to observe the tandem jumps.
Mathieu Klein, the mayor of Nancy, expressed sorrow that some victims perished “in full view of their loved ones.”
Chaynesse Khirouni, president of the Meurthe-et-Moselle department, noted that these family members experienced “considerable psychological trauma” from the incident.
During his visit to the crash site, Nuñez remarked on the “intense emotion” present and emphasized the “great solidarity” shown towards the victims’ families.
Medical and psychological support teams have been deployed to assist relatives and witnesses affected by the tragedy.
The plane crashed near the edge of the airfield, close to residential areas and a shopping center, narrowly avoiding nearby homes.
Yves Seguy, the prefect of Meurthe-et-Moselle, stated that “give or take a few meters, the accident could have caused collateral casualties.”
He described the plane’s descent as “almost vertical” and occurring in close proximity to a housing estate.
Half of those who lost their lives were nurses, according to Thierry Pechey, president of a local nursing organization.
He noted that they had chosen to participate in their first skydiving experience as a way to relax during a challenging heatwave.
This incident marks the deadliest private plane accident in French history, excluding military and commercial flights, as reported by news agency AFP citing the BEA aviation safety agency.
A witness who chose to remain anonymous recounted seeing the plane veering off course while driving past.
“Something was clearly wrong,” he stated.
Although he did not witness the impact due to an embankment obstructing his view, he heard the sound of the crash.
Upon arriving at the scene, he attempted to help extinguish the flames engulfing the wreckage.
”We saw right away that it was over; they had all died instantly,” he said.
Tomblaine Mayor Hervé Feron described the aircraft’s descent as “completely unexplained,” adding that it is “too early to seek explanations.”
He speculated that weather conditions might have contributed but acknowledged uncertainty.
France has recently been experiencing an intense heatwave, with an amber weather warning for high temperatures issued for Meurthe-et-Moselle on Sunday.
The role of weather in this tragic event remains unclear as authorities await further investigation results.
