At Least 24 Killed In Two Violent Shooting Attacks In Honduras/Getty Images
At least 24 individuals, including four police officers, lost their lives in two separate violent shootings in Honduras on Thursday.
The first incident occurred at a ranch in the northern region of the country, where authorities reported that at least 19 workers were shot dead.
In a second shooting in the coastal town of Omoa, located near the Guatemalan border, four police officers were confirmed dead, according to National Police spokesperson, Edgardo Barahona. Additionally, one civilian was also reported among the fatalities in that attack.
In response to these tragedies, the National Police issued a statement announcing plans for “direct intervention” in both affected areas.
While no clear motive has been identified for the assault on the ranch workers in Trujillo, it is noted that northern Honduras has experienced ongoing agrarian disputes for several years.
The police officers who were attacked were en route to Omoa from the capital, Tegucigalpa, as part of an anti-gang operation.
The total number of deceased from the Trujillo ranch incident remains uncertain, as relatives have begun retrieving the bodies of their loved ones, Barahona mentioned, citing the Associated Press.
In a separate press conference, Honduras Security Minister, Gerzon Velasquez, suggested that some bodies may have been removed by associates or individuals linked to criminal activities before authorities arrived at the scene, as reported by Reuters.
As of now, no arrests have been made.
Honduras continues to grapple with high crime rates attributed to widespread gang violence and the transnational drug trade.
Although the homicide rate has seen a decline, the country still holds the second-highest murder rate in the Americas, according to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights.
