Yara Shahidi will kick off North Carolina A&T State University’s 2024 Chancellor’s Speaker Series with a conversation about the upcoming election. The event, titled “Your Voice, Your Vote,” will take place on Oct. 24 at 6 p.m. in the Harrison Auditorium.
Shahidi, best known for her role on Black-ish, will discuss the importance of civic engagement. The conversation will be moderated by Tylik McMillan, a 2019 N.C. A&T graduate.
As the political race heats up, the discussion will focus on providing accurate information and emphasizing the power individuals and communities must create change. McMillan, a civil rights activist, will guide the conversation, focusing on how we can all contribute to shaping the future.
Shahidi, who has worked with Barack and Michelle Obama and founded WeVoteNext (formerly Eighteen x 18), is an ideal speaker for this event. Her organization focuses on engaging Gen Z and promoting the inclusion of marginalized communities in the political process. Despite her success in Hollywood, Shahidi has remained committed to education, earning a degree in social studies and African American studies from Harvard University.
McMillan has a long history of advocacy, working with Rev. Al Sharpton’s National Action Network and organizing key marches for civil rights and voting rights.
The event is free and open to the public, with tickets available starting Oct. 7 from the University Ticket Office in Brown Hall.
