Bayern Munich, Ajax To Open Kenya’s New Stadium In January 2027

Bayern Munich and Ajax Amsterdam are scheduled to inaugurate Kenya’s new national stadium with a friendly match in Nairobi on January 5, 2027, as the East African nation prepares to co-host the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

‎The encounter could feature newly crowned Ballon d’Or winner Harry Kane, offering Kenyan supporters an opportunity to witness some of Europe’s leading football stars on home soil.

‎The game will take place at the 60,000-seat Raila Odinga International Stadium, situated within Talanta Sports City.

‎The facility is expected to serve as one of the venues for the 2027 continental championship, jointly organised by Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.

‎Both clubs have confirmed the fixture through their official channels, while President William Ruto announced the event as a significant achievement in the country’s sporting development.

‎According to the Kenyan leader, the project demonstrates his administration’s commitment to constructing modern facilities capable of attracting elite teams and hosting major international competitions.

‎Ruto recalled promising citizens a world-class arena two years ago, noting that the completed structure had transformed Nairobi’s skyline.

‎He also confirmed that Bayern Munich and Ajax would launch the venue through their exhibition game.

‎The president explained that private-sector collaboration and a commercially sustainable arrangement would support the event, allowing sports investments to generate income, encourage business participation and create economic opportunities.

‎He described the occasion as more than the commissioning of a sporting facility, saying it represented Kenya’s aspirations and determination to achieve greater success.

‎The fixture is expected to attract global attention as authorities seek to demonstrate the country’s readiness to host AFCON 2027.

‎Bayern and Ajax have collectively secured 10 European Cup and UEFA Champions League trophies, adding prestige to the stadium’s opening ceremony.

‎Their most recent competitive meeting occurred during the Champions League group stage in December 2018, when both sides played out an entertaining 3-3 draw. Four goals were scored in the final 10 minutes of that contest.

‎Across 10 competitive encounters, the clubs have each registered three victories, while the remaining four games ended in stalemates.

‎Their last three meetings also finished level, with Bayern midfielder Joshua Kimmich featuring in the memorable 2018 clash.

‎The upcoming friendly will renew their rivalry while providing an opportunity to expand their African fan bases.

‎However, the occasion’s wider significance lies in the unveiling of Kenya’s new sporting landmark and the country’s efforts to establish itself as a destination for major international football events.
