Two teenage footballers from Scotland are hoping to make history after being invited to represent Uganda at youth international level.
Olly Fisher, 18, and his 16-year-old brother Seb, who play for Partick Thistle, are eligible to feature for the East African country through their mother, Kate, who was born in Uganda.
The brothers recently attended Uganda’s Under-20 and Under-17 training camps in Jinja after officials expressed interest in them several months ago.
Olly, a goalkeeper, and Seb, a striker, said they were surprised and honoured by the opportunity to play for a country with which their family has strong connections.
Their grandparents lived in Uganda for several years after their grandfather travelled there to work as a teacher.
Their mother was subsequently born in the country.
The siblings said their time with the Ugandan squads had been a positive experience, despite the hot conditions.
Seb said the players had welcomed them warmly, while some teammates came from the same area where their mother was born.
Former Hearts and Ghana midfielder Laryea Kingston, who coaches Uganda’s Under-20 side, has told the brothers they could become the first white players to represent the country.
The Fisher siblings are now hoping to return for future international assignments.
Olly is targeting a place in Uganda’s Under-20 squad should the team qualify for next year’s Africa Cup of Nations, while Seb could be involved with the Under-17 team at the World Cup in Qatar in November.
Both youngsters are expected to return to Scotland soon to continue their football development with Partick Thistle alongside their education.
