Irish President Catherine Connolly is set to meet King Charles during her three-day trip to Britain, which commenced on Monday.

‎Her visit began at the Irish Cultural Centre in Hammersmith, London, where she addressed the issue of housing shortages driving some Irish citizens to leave their homeland.

‎Connolly also interacted with participants of an Irish language class and enjoyed various musical and dance performances.

‎This marks Connolly’s inaugural official visit to England since her inauguration in November, during which she emphasized her dedication to connecting with the Irish diaspora.

‎At the cultural centre, Connolly remarked, “Historically, modern immigration has been largely influenced by economic factors, prompting many to leave Ireland for cities like London, Manchester, Liverpool, and Birmingham.

‎This trend has occurred in waves since the 19th and 20th centuries, and sadly, it continues today as individuals depart for various reasons, particularly the lack of housing.”

‎The president highlighted the profound impact of the Irish community on British society, stating, “There is hardly a sector of British life that has not been shaped by Irish influence.

‎The contributions of the Irish are incredibly varied, spanning from arts and culture to healthcare, education, construction, infrastructure, and professional services.”

‎Later on Monday evening, the Irish Ambassador to Britain, Martin Fraser, will host a reception at the Irish embassy in London in honor of President Connolly and her husband, Brian McEnery.

‎The president’s itinerary will continue on Tuesday with visits to the Chelsea Flower Show and the London Irish Centre in Camden. The trip will conclude on Wednesday with engagements at Leeds University and the Leeds Irish Centre.

‎In Leeds, President Connolly will receive updates on the work of the local Irish Health Centre and meet representatives from various Irish organizations in the area.

‎The visit marks Connolly’s third official trip since taking office, following previous visits to Northern Ireland and Spain.
