FIFA has announced an innovative pre-match ceremony that will take place at every game during the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup, aiming to shift focus from individual players to entire teams.
The governing body confirmed that the traditional single-player walkout, which made its debut at last year’s Club World Cup, will not be part of this year’s festivities.
Instead, all members of each matchday squad will walk onto the field together and assemble around the center circle for team introductions and national anthems.
In a statement, FIFA described this new approach as a “fan-centric pre-match ceremony” intended to ensure that every selected player, not just the starting eleven, experiences “that symbolic moment of pride and emotion when representing their country on football’s grandest stage.”
The ceremony will also feature new visual elements, including handheld flags and the unfurling of the national flags of both competing nations across the pitch prior to kickoff.
This revamped ceremony will make its World Cup debut ahead of the tournament’s opening match on Thursday, June 11.
The host nation, Canada, will experience it for the first time against Bosnia & Herzegovina on Friday, June 12.
The United States will kick off their group stage campaign against Paraguay at 2am BST on Saturday, June 13.
England supporters will witness the new walkout ahead of the Three Lions’ opener against Croatia at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, on Wednesday, June 17.
This initiative reflects FIFA’s broader commitment to making the World Cup a more inclusive event, where every squad member feels integral to the occasion from the very start.
