US President Donald Trump has asserted that a ceasefire with Iran remains intact, despite recent confrontations between Iranian forces and US naval destroyers in the Strait of Hormuz, where both parties have blamed each other for the outbreak of hostilities.
The United States accused Iran of launching an “unprovoked attack” involving missiles, drones, and small boats against three of its warships.
President Donald Trump remarked that Iran “trifled with us today.”
In response, Iran’s top military officials claimed that the US targeted an Iranian oil tanker and another vessel approaching the strategic waterway, alleging that the US conducted “aerial attacks” on several coastal regions.
The flare-up follows a statement from Iran’s Foreign Ministry, which indicated it was contemplating a US proposal aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict.
In a further indication of the fragile situation, the United Arab Emirates’ Ministry of Defence announced early today that its air defenses were “actively engaging” with missile and drone strikes originating from Iran.
Iranian state media reported “explosions” in the Strait of Hormuz, characterizing them as an “exchange of fire” with the “enemy.” Local reports also indicated that explosions were heard in Tehran.
Shortly thereafter, Iran’s military command claimed that US “aerial attacks” had struck the coasts of Bandar Khamir, Sirik, and Qeshm Island. They asserted that they retaliated by attacking US military vessels, inflicting “significant damage,” and accused the US of breaching the ceasefire.
US Central Command (Centcom) labeled the Iranian actions as “unprovoked,” stating that Iranian forces launched multiple missiles, drones, and small boats while US Navy guided-missile destroyers were navigating through the strait. Centcom reported that it had neutralized incoming threats and targeted Iranian military sites associated with the attacks.
”Centcom does not seek escalation but remains positioned and ready to protect American forces,” the statement emphasized.
In a post on Truth Social, President Trump declared that the US had destroyed several small boats, missiles, and drones, asserting that “great damage” was inflicted on Iranian attackers.
He reiterated his warning regarding the peace negotiations, “Just like we knocked them out again today, we’ll knock them out a lot harder, and a lot more violently, in the future, if they don’t get their Deal signed, FAST!”
An Israeli source confirmed to the BBC that there was “no Israeli involvement” in the recent incidents.
The rising tensions come despite President Trump’s recent claims that the conflict with Iran would be resolved swiftly. Reports from US news outlet Axios indicated that the White House might be nearing a 14-point memorandum of understanding with Iran to establish a framework for more detailed nuclear discussions.
On Wednesday, an Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson stated that Tehran was considering the latest US proposal and would communicate its stance through Pakistani mediators. Pakistan’s Foreign Minister expressed his country’s commitment to transforming the ceasefire into a permanent resolution of the conflict.
However, a senior member of Iran’s parliament dismissed the proposed memorandum as a mere “wish list.” Ebrahim Rezaei, spokesperson for the Iranian parliament’s national security and foreign policy commission, warned that Iran “has its finger on the trigger,” threatening a severe and regretful response if the US fails to meet its demands.
Both nations have signaled a willingness to escalate violence if their respective conditions for a peace agreement are not fulfilled.
In a post on Truth Social dated May 6, President Trump stated that if Iran failed to reach an agreement, “the bombing will commence, and it will, unfortunately, be at a much greater level and intensity than previously experienced.”
Previously, President Trump had indicated that Operation Epic Fury, the initial US-Israeli campaign against Iran, would conclude “provided Iran complies with the terms that have been established.” Before this declaration, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio had announced that the operation was complete and had met its goals.
President Trump reiterated, for the umpteenth time, that Iran had consented to never develop a nuclear weapon “among other stipulations”, a statement that has yet to be verified by Tehran.
The nuclear program of Iran remains one of the primary points of contention between the two nations.
