In a heartbreaking incident, a 31-year-old man reportedly shot and killed his seven young children and a cousin, while critically injuring his wife and another woman early yesterday morning in northwestern Louisiana. The shocking act of violence marks the deadliest mass shooting in the United States in over two years.
“This is an incredibly tragic event, perhaps the worst we’ve ever experienced in Shreveport,” Mayor Tom Arceneaux remarked during a press briefing.
The shooting was described as “domestic in nature” by Shreveport police Cpl. Chris Bordelon. Authorities responded to reports of gunfire in the Cedar Grove neighborhood just after 6 a.m. local time.
According to police, Shamar Elkins first targeted his wife at a home on Harrison Street. He then moved to another residence on West 79th Street, where he opened fire on the eight children and the second adult victim, who was the mother of one of the deceased children.
The youngest victim, identified as Jayla Elkins, was only 3 years old. The other children who lost their lives include Shayla Elkins, 5; Kayla Pugh, 6; Layla Pugh, 7; Markaydon Pugh, 10; Sariahh Snow, 11; Khedarrion Snow, 6; and Braylon Snow, 5, as reported by the Caddo Parish Coroner’s Office. Bordelon confirmed that Elkins’ wife sustained “very serious injuries,” while the other woman is facing “life-threatening injuries.”
Tragic Mass Shooting In Louisiana Claims Lives of Seven Children And Two Adults
During the harrowing incident, some of the children attempted to flee through a back door, according to state Representative Tammy Phelps. A 13-year-old boy who jumped from the roof sustained “some broken bones” but is expected to recover, Bordelon noted. “We’re just grateful he managed to escape,” he added.
Following the shooting, Elkins fled toward a nearby tire shop. A neighbor reported that surveillance footage captured him carjacking a vehicle and leading police on a chase into Bossier Parish. Officers ultimately shot and killed Elkins across the Red River from Shreveport. “Officers were compelled to use their department-issued firearms, neutralizing the suspect, who was pronounced dead at the scene,” the Shreveport Police Department stated on social media.
Authorities are still investigating the incident to ascertain a complete motive, though they reiterated that it appears to be domestic in nature.
Elkins married his wife, Shaneiqua Pugh, 34, approximately two years ago. Reports indicate that the couple was in the process of separating and had been engaged in disputes leading up to the tragedy. Relatives revealed that Elkins had been under significant stress regarding his relationship with his wife and had expressed feelings of despair.
His mother and stepfather told The New York Times that he had confided in them about his wife wanting a divorce and admitted to struggling with “dark thoughts.” “I told him, ‘You can overcome this,’” his stepfather Marcus Jackson recounted. “But he also mentioned that some people don’t come back from their demons.”
Elkins served in the Louisiana Army National Guard as both a signal support system specialist and a fire support specialist but left the Army in 2020 as a private without having been deployed. He had multiple prior criminal convictions in Caddo District Court, including an arrest for illegal weapon use and carrying a firearm on school grounds in March 2019, as well as a driving while intoxicated charge in 2016.
In a 2019 incident, an arrest report detailed that Elkins brandished a 9-millimeter handgun from his waistband and fired at a vehicle five times after the driver pointed a gun at him and fled. The altercation occurred near a playground where children were present, as noted by the officer in the court documents.
City Council member, Tabatha Taylor, became emotional, urging the community to better utilize resources to tackle mental health issues. “This isn’t a joke! This is reality, and this is what happens when someone reaches their breaking point,” Taylor expressed.
Investigators will look into whether this incident represents family annihilation, calculated effort to eliminate one’s entire family in a single act, according to Andrew McCabe, former FBI Deputy Director and CNN senior law enforcement analyst.
“I believe the focus now is to revisit and identify the warning signs that may have been evident to family members, friends, and others,” McCabe stated, “and collaborate with the community to enhance understanding of what actions to take when someone around you is descending into severe depression.”
This shooting marks the deadliest event in the United States since January 2024, when a 23-year-old man fatally shot eight individuals, primarily his relatives, in a suburb of Chicago.
So far this year, there have been at least 114 mass shootings in the United States, as per the Gun Violence Archive, which defines a mass shooting as an event where four or more individuals are shot, excluding the shooter. The mayor of Shreveport characterized the scene in the city of over 180,000 residents as “horrific,” stating that the incident has “shaken the entire community.”
“Our community is mourning the unimaginable loss of innocent lives. There are no words that can adequately express this tragedy, nor any distance that can shield us from it,” Arceneaux remarked in a statement, encouraging residents to unite in support of one another. “We must confront the underlying issues, domestic violence, untreated trauma, and the silence that permits both to fester,” he wrote.
The deaths of the eight children have more than doubled the homicide rate in Shreveport and Caddo Parish this year, according to the coroner’s office.
Various law enforcement agencies are probing the circumstances surrounding this tragedy, Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill stated. “We do not have all the details yet, but I am profoundly saddened by this senseless loss of life. I’m praying for the victims and their families during this tragic time,” Murrill conveyed in a statement.
US House Speaker Mike Johnson, who represents the Shreveport area in Congress, referred to the killings as “devastating.” “We’re keeping the victims, their families, and our Shreveport community in our thoughts and prayers during this incredibly challenging period,” Johnson said.
