Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister Engages South Africa Amid Disturbing Attacks On Nationals

Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has initiated urgent diplomatic conversations with his South African counterpart, Ronald Lamola, in response to alarming videos depicting violent assaults on Ghanaian citizens in South Africa.

‎In a statement posted on his Facebook page today, Minister Ablakwa revealed that he reached out to the South African Minister for International Relations and Cooperation to discuss the troubling incidents and to coordinate an official response.

‎”I contacted him regarding the viral videos showcasing Ghanaians facing deeply concerning xenophobic assaults in South Africa,” he stated.

‎The South African government has expressed its concern over the situation and assured Ghana of prompt action. “The South African Foreign Minister conveyed his sympathy to the victims and committed to thorough investigations into these distressing events,” Ablakwa reported.

‎He also mentioned that Pretoria plans to hold a briefing with African ambassadors later today as part of their efforts to address the issues raised by affected nations. Additionally, he confirmed ongoing collaboration with Ghana’s diplomatic mission in South Africa. “Since yesterday, I have been in continuous communication with Ghana’s High Commissioner in South Africa, His Excellency Benjamin Quarshie, to coordinate our response,” he noted.

‎Ablakwa indicated that diplomatic teams have successfully located one individual featured in the viral footage and are providing consular support. “I am pleased to share that our diplomatic mission has identified the primary victim in the video and is offering necessary assistance. He is currently in good condition,” he stated.

‎He reassured the public that no fatalities among Ghanaians have been reported in connection with these incidents and urged calm.

‎”No Ghanaian lives have been lost. We call for tranquility and confidence in our collective ability to safeguard Ghanaians,” he affirmed.

‎Reiterating the government’s dedication, the Minister emphasized that the administration is resolute in ensuring the safety of citizens both domestically and internationally. “Let me assure fellow citizens that the President Mahama Administration is unwavering in its commitment to the welfare and security of Ghanaians everywhere. We are determined to protect all our citizens,” he asserted.

‎Ablakwa also emphasized the importance of continued unity across Africa, cautioning against divisions. “May these unfortunate events not diminish our Pan-African love and solidarity. The vast majority of Africans are united and share an unbreakable bond, we shall not be fractured by the animosity of a few fringe elements,” he remarked.

‎As details of the specific viral videos continue to circulate online, South Africa has faced recurring episodes of xenophobic violence targeting foreign nationals, particularly migrants from other African nations. Observers often attribute these incidents to economic pressures, unemployment, and competition for informal job opportunities.

‎Previous waves of xenophobic violence in South Africa have prompted diplomatic interventions from affected countries, including Ghana and Nigeria, alongside condemnations from regional organizations such as the African Union.

‎South African authorities have consistently promised investigations and enhanced public safety measures following such outbreaks; however, concerns about future incidents remain prevalent.

‎The recent reports, which emerged earlier this week, have once again triggered diplomatic discussions between Accra and Pretoria as both governments strive to verify facts and ensure the safety of their nationals.
