In Washington, D.C., the 64th Anniversary of Gabon’s National Day was marked with a celebration hosted by H.E. Noël Nelson Messone, the Gabonese Ambassador to the United States, at the Madison Hotel on August 17, 2024. The event was a gathering of diplomats, U.S. State Department representatives, Gabonese citizens, NGO officials, and others, including descendants of African ancestry with roots traced back to Gabon.
The evening began with a cocktail reception, followed by a ceremony featuring the presentation of flags, the national anthems, and a speech by Ambassador Messone. He emphasized the fragility of peace and democracy and the importance of strong institutions that align with the will of the people. Messone spoke of a constitutional referendum planned for later this year and the presidential election scheduled for August 2025. He also announced Gabon’s reinstatement with the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS) and encouraged American investment, especially in small and medium-sized enterprises and the natural resources sector.

The evening continued with a buffet of Gabonese cuisine, cultural performances, and music that filled the air with lively rhythms. Notably, nearly 80 attendees of Gabonese descent, connected through African Ancestry, were present, sparking discussions about potential dual citizenship for those with verified Gabonese DNA.
The event was a vibrant celebration, with guests in a mix of traditional, Western, and military attire. Ambassador Messone mingled with the crowd, embodying the spirit of unity and optimism that characterized the celebration. As the night drew to a close, the sense of shared hope for a peaceful and prosperous future for Gabon was palpable, setting the tone for what lies ahead for the nation and its people.
