At the 2024 Sundance Film Festival held on January 17, Malia Obama, the eldest daughter of Michelle and Barack Obama, unveiled the trailer for her latest cinematic venture, “The Heart.”

“The Heart,” a poignant narrative following a young man honoring his mother’s final wish amidst his grief, marks Malia’s directorial and screenwriting debut. The film, boasting a predominantly Black cast, is slated for full screening over the festival’s ten-day span, competing in Sundance’s U.S. fiction short films category.

Reflecting on her creation during the trailer’s showcase, Malia expressed, “The film is about lost objects and lonely people, forgiveness and regret, but I also think it works hard to uncover where tenderness and closeness can exist in these things.”

Stepping onto the Sundance red carpet to commemorate her cinematic premiere, the 25-year-old donned a grey coat, complemented by a thin wool scarf and brown combat boots. Malia’s distinctive wine-colored goddess braids added a unique flair to her ensemble.

Malia’s foray into filmmaking marks a significant stride towards her artistic aspirations. Prior to “The Heart,” she contributed behind the scenes of “Girls” and secured an internship as a production assistant on Halle Berry’s “Extent.” Additionally, Malia boasts official writing credits under the pseudonym “Malia Ann” for Donald Glover’s “Swarm,” notably contributing to the fifth episode titled “Girl, Bye.”

As Malia embarks on her creative journey, her Sundance debut underscores her burgeoning presence in the entertainment realm. Let’s cheer her on as she continues to carve her path in the world of cinema. Explore the full trailer of “The Heart” below.
