‎A devastating chemical explosion at the Nippon Dynawave Packaging facility in Washington has resulted in one fatality and left nine individuals unaccounted for, according to local authorities.

‎The incident occurred at approximately 7:15 AM PDT (3:15 PM GMT) at the plant located about 130 miles south of Seattle.

‎In addition to the confirmed death, nine others sustained injuries, including eight employees and one firefighter, as reported by the Longview Fire Department.

‎The explosion was triggered by a rupture in a tank containing white liquor, a highly corrosive substance utilized in the paper manufacturing process.

‎The company confirmed the nature of the chemical involved in a statement released shortly after the event.

‎Recovery operations have been complicated by ongoing safety issues at the site.

‎”The tank remains unstable, creating hazardous conditions for emergency responders,” the fire department stated in an update.

‎Efforts are underway to reinforce and stabilize the area before further recovery activities can commence.

‎Initial estimates indicated that the tank held around 80,000 gallons (300,000 liters) of white liquor, however, officials later revised this figure to approximately 900,000 gallons (3,406,000 liters).

‎It is believed that about 90,000 gallons (340,000 liters) may still be contained within the compromised tank.

‎Cowlitz Fire and Rescue Chief, Scott Goldstein, reported that ten individuals were injured and transported to nearby hospitals.

‎The injuries range from critical to minor and include both burns and inhalation injuries. The company noted that multiple individuals are in critical condition.

‎While the situation at the scene is reportedly stable, authorities advise the public to avoid the vicinity as firefighting operations continue.

‎Chief Goldstein assured that the fire does not pose a risk to the surrounding community.

‎Emergency responders are currently in the recovery phase.

‎”No identifying information regarding those injured or deceased will be released until family members have been notified,” stated the Longview Fire Department.

‎White liquor is an alkaline solution composed of sodium hydroxide and sodium sulfide.

‎Washington Governor, Bob Ferguson, expressed his condolences, stating, “I am deeply saddened by the fatalities. My thoughts are with the workers and their families, as well as the first responders.”

‎Local reports indicate that this facility also experienced a significant fire in July 2023, when large piles of wood on-site burned for several days.

‎The plant manufactures a variety of products, including tissues, printer paper, cups, plates, and cartons, employing around 1,000 workers.

‎In a related note, officials in California recently reported that a chemical tank posing an explosion threat has been rendered safe.

‎The tank in Orange County contained a chemical used in plastic production, leading to an evacuation order for approximately 50,000 residents.

‎However, no evacuation measures have been deemed necessary in Washington at this time.
