A significant explosion and fire erupted at a Staten Island shipyard on Friday afternoon, resulting in the injury of numerous New York City Fire Department (FDNY) firefighters and first responders, as well as the death of one civilian.
During a press briefing on Friday night, FDNY EMS Deputy Assistant Chief, Ian Swords, confirmed that a civilian lost their life at the scene and that 34 firefighters were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Among the injured, two individuals sustained severe injuries, a fire marshal who is currently in critical condition and a firefighter in serious condition. Both experienced “blast energy” effects from the explosion, which can lead to internal injuries.
Richmond University Medical Center reported that the fire marshal has suffered a temporal fracture and a minor brain bleed, while doctors are monitoring the firefighter for potential muscle damage.
New York City Mayor, Zohran Mamdani, provided updates on the situation after 9 p.m., stating that the fire had been brought “under control.”
”Today, a fire ignited on Richmond Terrace in Staten Island, followed shortly by reports of an explosion,” he posted on X. “What transpired was a rapidly evolving emergency that claimed one life and injured over 30 civilians and first responders. The fire is now contained.”
He added, “We mourn the loss of life today and keep their family in our thoughts. This evening, I visited a firefighter in serious condition and the family of the fire marshal who remains critical. I urge all New Yorkers to keep those injured, and their families, in your thoughts.
To the first responders who bravely faced danger without hesitation, thank you. You risk your lives daily for the safety of others, and our city is grateful.”
The incident began when authorities received a call at 3:27 p.m. local time about workers trapped in a confined space at 3075 Richmond Terrace, situated between Lockman and Andros avenues.
Upon arrival, first responders encountered smoke and flames in the basement of a 150-by-150-foot metal structure located at the rear of the shipping docks. Reports indicated that two workers were trapped inside, prompting crews to initiate a search.
A second alarm was raised at 4:08 p.m., and just 11 minutes later, a “major explosion” occurred at 4:19 p.m., resulting in a large fire and a massive emergency response.
The FDNY deployed 68 units and 212 personnel to tackle the blaze.
”We had firefighters inside conducting searches, as well as on top of the barge and adjacent areas,” stated FDNY Chief John Esposito. “Several were injured during this operation. We did recover a deceased civilian.”
As of 8 p.m. local time, Esposito confirmed that the fire was under control and all searches had been completed. No individuals remain unaccounted for, and an investigation into the incident will continue.
Mamdani expressed his appreciation for every first responder who rushed to assist during the crisis.
”As the fire intensified, first responders did what they always do, they ran toward danger to ensure others could escape safely,” he said during the briefing.
”Firefighters from across our city responded, demonstrating an all-hands-on-deck effort. I commend each of them for their swift actions and bravery.”
Once the fire is fully extinguished, FDNY marshals will conduct a thorough investigation into its origins. “The findings will be shared with New Yorkers as soon as possible,” he assured.
”In the meantime, I encourage all New Yorkers to remember those who have been injured and honor the memory of the individual we lost.”
