Will Smith has secured a dynamic role in his expanding repertoire of projects, signing on to headline the action-packed thriller “Sugar Bandits.”

Adapted from Chuck Hogan’s novel “Devils in Exile,” the film follows an Iraq War veteran who joins forces with fellow vets to combat the drug trade in Boston. Notably, Hogan, known for his work on “The Town” and “The Strain,” co-wrote the screenplay.

AGC International and CAA Media Finance will handle the film’s global distribution rights, presenting it to potential buyers at the upcoming EFM. Smith, alongside Jon Mone, will produce through Westbrook Studios, while Ryan Shimazaki oversees production.

Stuart Ford produces for AGC Studios, which fully finances the project, with Richard Abate from 3 Arts Entertainment also producing.

This venture marks Smith’s latest cinematic endeavor following his role in Antoine Fuqua’s “Emancipation,” which, despite a record-breaking deal at Cannes, didn’t meet expected success post-launch.

Additionally, Smith remains involved in ongoing projects such as the fourth installment of the “Bad Boys” series and the anticipated sequel to the zombie hit “I Am Legend,” featuring Michael B. Jordan alongside Smith in a reprised role with an alternate ending.

“Sugar Bandits,” initially announced in 2013 with Universal, now comes to fruition under Smith’s lead. The actor is represented by CAA, while Hogan’s representation includes WME and 3 Arts Entertainment.

As the European Film Market unfolds alongside the Berlin Film Festival, spotlighting premieres like “Small Things Like These” starring Cillian Murphy, the industry anticipates the unveiling of Smith’s latest cinematic endeavor.
