Hafidh Ameir Hassan, husband of Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan, has died at a medical facility in Zanzibar while undergoing treatment for a heart-related illness.
The death was confirmed by Vice-President Deogratius Ndejembi, who said Ameir passed away at about 8:00 a.m. local time on Monday at Emilio Mzena Memorial Hospital.
Ameir’s remains were laid to rest later that evening at the family compound in Kizimkazi, a village on Zanzibar, Tanzania’s semi-autonomous archipelago.
A scholar in agriculture, Ameir maintained a largely private life despite his wife’s prominent political career.
He assumed the position of Tanzania’s first First Gentleman when Samia became president in 2021.
Following the announcement, Ndejembi expressed sympathy to President Samia and the deceased’s relatives and associates.
Tributes also came from across the region.
Kenyan President William Ruto described Ameir’s passing as deeply painful, saying President Samia had lost her lifelong partner, while his children had lost a cherished father.
Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema expressed solidarity with Tanzania’s presidential family, saying his country stood with them during the period of mourning.
Burundi’s President Évariste Ndayishimiye also conveyed his condolences and offered prayers for comfort and strength for Samia and her family.
He prayed for eternal peace for the deceased.
Ameir was known for avoiding the spotlight and made only occasional appearances beside the president during state functions and other official engagements.
He and Samia married in 1978, years before she embarked on her political career.
Their union produced four children, three boys and one girl.
Their daughter, Wanu Hafidh Ameir, followed her parents into public service and currently represents Zanzibar in the House of Representatives.
