Zimbabwe has taken delivery of its first MD 530F helicopter, with the US manufacturer confirming the aircraft has been handed over to a wildlife conservation organisation operating in the country.

MD Helicopters announced the milestone on its website, describing it as the first MD 530F ever delivered to Zimbabwe. The aircraft was accepted at the company’s manufacturing facility in Mesa, Arizona, before being prepared for international shipment to the conservation agency.

Built for demanding environments, the single-engine MD 530F is well suited to Zimbabwe’s rugged landscapes, where it will support anti-poaching patrols, aerial surveillance and other conservation missions across the country’s national parks and wildlife reserves.

Powered by a Rolls-Royce 250-C30 turboshaft engine producing 650 shaft horsepower, the helicopter is designed to perform in high-altitude, high-temperature conditions. According to the manufacturer, it has a range of about 223 nautical miles and can carry an internal payload of more than 1,600 pounds.

The delivery involved more than transporting the aircraft to its new operator. MD Helicopters said it managed the entire process, including aircraft preparation, export coordination, logistics and delivery support as part of its turnkey service for international customers.

Chief Executive Officer Ryan Weeks said the handover reflects the company’s broader commitment to supporting operators around the world.

“This delivery represents more than just the sale of a helicopter. It demonstrates our commitment to supporting operators wherever they operate around the world,” he said.

Weeks added that the company remains involved throughout the aircraft’s lifecycle, from manufacturing and customisation to logistics, delivery and long-term support.

The delivery also strengthens MD Helicopters’ footprint in Africa, where its 500-series helicopters have been used for a range of military, law enforcement and humanitarian missions. Three MD 500E helicopters were supplied to El Salvador’s air force in 2012 for United Nations peacekeeping operations in Mali. In 2022, the United States donated four MD 530F helicopters to El Salvador for similar UN missions.

Known for their agility, reliability and ability to operate in harsh conditions, the aircraft have become popular with security agencies and specialist operators worldwide. Those same qualities are expected to make Zimbabwe’s first MD 530F a valuable asset in protecting the country’s wildlife and supporting conservation efforts.

MD Helicopters said the delivery expands its international presence and reinforces its commitment to providing mission-ready aircraft and long-term support to operators across Africa.
