Ghana Repatriates 327 Nationals From Côte d’Ivoire Following Demolition Crisis‎

The Ghanaian government has successfully repatriated 327 citizens stranded in Port Bouët, Côte d’Ivoire, after a demolition operation displaced numerous residents, leaving many without homes or means of income.

‎In a statement released on June 12, 2026, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that the affected individuals were among those living in areas severely impacted by a mass demolition initiative conducted by local authorities in the Port Bouët Municipality of Abidjan.

‎The Ministry explained that the demolition rendered many individuals homeless and unable to find alternative housing or secure employment in Côte d’Ivoire.

‎Earlier, on June 11, 2026, the government had already facilitated the return of 228 Ghanaians, who arrived safely back in Ghana.

‎Arrangements were finalized for the remaining individuals to return on June 12, bringing the total number of repatriated nationals to 327.

‎To ensure a smooth return process, the Ghanaian government provided buses and trucks to transport the returnees and their belongings at no cost from Côte d’Ivoire back to Ghana.

‎”The Government of Ghana has arranged transportation for our citizens and their possessions free of charge to ensure their safe return,” stated the Ministry.

‎Additionally, it was disclosed that Ivorian authorities have expressed intentions to compensate those affected by the demolition exercise.

‎The Ministry emphasized that Ghana would continue discussions with Ivorian officials to ensure that the promised compensation reaches the impacted nationals.

‎”The Ministry acknowledges that Ivorian authorities are willing to compensate victims of their demolition activities and will actively engage to guarantee that our affected citizens receive the promised support,” the statement added.

‎The Ministry also noted that Ghana’s diplomatic mission in Abidjan would persist in coordinating efforts and liaising with relevant stakeholders regarding this issue.

‎Reiterating its commitment to the welfare and safety of Ghanaians abroad, the government pledged ongoing support to facilitate the successful reintegration of those affected.

‎”The Government of Ghana is dedicated to ensuring the welfare and protection of its citizens and will enhance efforts to provide necessary assistance for a smooth return and reintegration process,” the Ministry stated.

‎Finally, the Ministry expressed gratitude to the Ivorian authorities and all involved parties for their cooperation in facilitating the repatriation efforts.

‎It assured the public that further updates on this situation would be provided as needed.
