A Utah mother, Kouri Richins, has been sentenced to life imprisonment without the chance of parole following her conviction for the murder of her husband, Eric Richins.
The jury found her guilty in March, determining that she poisoned him with a fentanyl-laced beverage in 2022.
The 36-year-old woman was reportedly facing significant financial difficulties, accumulating millions in debt, and had taken out life insurance policies on her husband.
Prosecutors revealed during the lengthy trial that she was also involved in an extramarital relationship.
During sentencing on Wednesday, which coincided with what would have been Eric Richins’ 44th birthday, Judge Richard Mrazi stated, “A person convicted of those actions is simply too dangerous to ever be free.”
Richins, a mother of three who chose not to testify during her trial, addressed her children for approximately 30 minutes during the hearing.
”I know today you don’t want to speak to me and you hate me. That’s OK. When you are ready, I will be here for you,” she expressed.
In addition to murder, Richins was convicted of fraudulently claiming insurance benefits following her husband’s death at their residence near Park City.
Prosecutors argued that she mistakenly believed she would inherit his estate valued at over $4 million after his passing and was planning a future with her lover.
Furthermore, Richins was found guilty of attempted murder for an earlier incident in which she poisoned her husband’s sandwich.
Her arrest occurred in March 2023, just two months after she released a children’s book titled Are You With Me?, aimed at helping families cope with the loss of a loved one.
In a prior interview with radio station KPCW, she stated, “We wrote this book and we’re really hoping that it provides some comfort not just for our family, but for others going through similar experiences.”
She dedicated the book to her husband, referring to him as “my amazing husband and a wonderful father.”
