The Government of Ghana has unveiled plans to increase the number of households benefiting from the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) initiative from 350,000 to 400,000. The expansion aims to bolster social support for vulnerable communities across the nation.

‎Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Protection, made the announcement yesterday during a meeting with Robert S. Chase, the World Bank Social Policy Practice Manager for West and Central Africa, who is currently in Ghana to enhance collaboration on social protection programs.

‎The Minister indicated that the initiative is part of broader efforts to strengthen the country’s social safety net and provide assistance to a greater number of at-risk households.

‎Dr. Lartey emphasized that programs like LEAP are crucial in alleviating poverty and enhancing livelihoods, especially for marginalized groups.

‎The discussions between the government and the World Bank centered on advancing key initiatives under the Ghana Productive Safety Net Project 2, which includes the LEAP cash transfer program and technical assistance for the Ghana School Feeding Programme.

‎The Minister highlighted the significance of fostering partnerships, including private sector involvement, to sustain and expand social welfare initiatives. She assured that strategies are being implemented to facilitate a smooth transition for beneficiaries exiting these programs.

‎Additionally, Dr. Lartey pointed out ongoing legislative measures such as the Social Protection Act and the Affirmative Action Act, which are anticipated to enhance coordination and efficiency within the sector.

‎In response, Mr. Chase reiterated the World Bank’s dedication to supporting Ghana’s social protection framework, particularly in allocating resources aimed at improving the living standards of vulnerable populations.

‎The anticipated expansion of LEAP is expected to greatly extend the reach of Ghana’s flagship cash transfer initiative as the government intensifies its commitment to building a more inclusive and resilient social protection system.
