Ghana’s President Congratulates NASA Astronaut Christina Koch On Historic Artemis II Mission
President of the Republic of Ghana, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, has extended his heartfelt congratulations to NASA astronaut Christina Koch for her groundbreaking participation as the sole woman on the Artemis II mission, which successfully orbited the Moon.
In a statement released today, President Mahama emphasized Koch’s unique connection to Ghana, recalling her experience as an exchange student at the University of Ghana during the 1999/2000 academic year.
“Her time at Legon was not merely a brief visit; she fully engaged with our culture and heritage. By studying subjects such as the History of Ghana, African History, Rural Sociology, Music, and even taking Twi for Beginners, she established a foundation of global citizenship right here in Accra,” he remarked.
The President described the poignant moment when Koch raised the Ghanaian flag in outer space as “a deeply moving occasion for every Ghanaian.” He noted that it symbolizes the enduring bonds formed and lessons learned, regardless of how far one travels—even into the expanse of space.
Mahama praised her journey from Ghana’s educational institutions to the realms of space exploration, calling it a source of motivation for young Ghanaians. “Christina’s path from the classrooms of the University of Ghana to the frontiers of space serves as a compelling inspiration to every young person in Ghana. It highlights that our educational establishments continue to cultivate and shape global leaders who break barriers and aspire to reach for the stars,” he stated.
Artemis II, NASA’s second mission under the Artemis program, marked the first crewed flight to orbit the Moon in over fifty years. The mission is designed to test spacecraft systems, collect vital data for future lunar landings, and lay the groundwork for a sustainable human presence on and around the Moon.
President Mahama concluded by wishing Christina Koch and the Artemis II crew a safe return to Earth, emphasizing that their achievements serve as a powerful motivation for future generations in Ghana, across Africa, and around the globe to pursue their ambitious aspirations. He expressed pride in Koch’s accomplishments and the recognition she brings to Ghana.
