Ghana Announces Visa-Free Entry For All Africans From May 25 To Boost Trade And Regional Integration

Ghana will open its borders to all African passport holders without the need for visas from May 25, a move timed to coincide with Africa Day and aimed at boosting regional integration, tourism, and trade.

The announcement, made by President John Mahama and confirmed by Foreign Affairs Minister Sam Okudzeto Ablakwa, signals a major shift in the country’s immigration approach. It came during the first official state visit of Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa to Ghana, highlighting the broader diplomatic context of strengthening ties across the continent.

Under the new arrangement, travellers from across Africa will no longer be required to obtain visas before arrival, placing Ghana among a select group of countries—Benin, The Gambia, Rwanda, and Seychelles—that already offer visa-free access to all African nationals. The policy effectively removes pre-arrival entry requirements, simplifying movement into the country.

The initiative builds on groundwork laid by the previous administration. Former President Nana Akufo-Addo had announced a similar plan in his final State of the Nation Address in January 2025, promising visa-free travel for all African passport holders. However, the policy was not implemented before the end of his tenure as initially anticipated.

Officials say the new visa-free regime will be integrated into a broader overhaul of Ghana’s immigration system. Central to this reform is the rollout of an electronic visa platform expected next month, designed to streamline entry procedures while maintaining effective border management.

Ablakwa said the policy is intended to “reinforce the country’s position as the cradle of Pan-Africanism,” while also unlocking economic opportunities through increased tourism and stronger intra-African trade links. He reiterated that the visa-free access will operate alongside the upcoming e-visa system being introduced by the Mahama administration.

At the same time, the government has been working to improve travel access for Ghanaian citizens abroad. According to the Foreign Ministry, 23 visa waiver agreements have been negotiated for Ghanaian passport holders since last year, expanding their global mobility.

The introduction of visa-free entry for Africans is expected to enhance the ease of movement across the continent, with far-reaching implications for business travel, cultural exchange, and regional cooperation.
