The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has officially dismissed Otto Addo from his role as head coach of the Black Stars, following a disappointing 2-1 loss to Germany in Stuttgart. The decision comes just hours after the match and marks a sudden end to Addo’s second tenure with the national team.
The GFA’s decision follows a challenging March international window, which saw Ghana suffer a heavy 5-1 defeat to Austria, compounded by the recent loss to Germany. These results have raised concerns regarding the team’s performance as they prepare for the 2026 World Cup.
An emergency meeting took place shortly after the Germany match, involving officials from the FA, the Sports Ministry led by Minister Kofi Adams, and Otto Addo himself. The swift conclusion of this meeting led to the decision regarding Addo’s future.
In a statement released today, the GFA confirmed, “The Ghana Football Association has parted ways with the Head Coach of the senior men’s national team, Otto Addo, effective immediately.” The association expressed gratitude for Addo’s contributions and wished him success in his future endeavors.
The GFA also indicated that they would announce a new technical direction for the team in due course.
Addo’s second stint began in 2024 after the Africa Cup of Nations but was marked by inconsistency. He failed to secure qualification for the 2025 AFCON, which was a significant setback, although he did manage to guide the team to a spot in the 2026 World Cup.
Despite achieving this qualification, recent performances have raised alarms, particularly concerning defensive weaknesses and a lack of team cohesion as Ghana gears up for the global tournament.
During his second term, Addo recorded eight victories, five draws, and nine losses across 22 matches. In his initial spell, he achieved five wins, three draws, and four defeats, leading Ghana to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where they were eliminated in the group stage.
With Addo’s departure, he will not be at the helm for the 2026 World Cup in North America, where Ghana is set to compete against Panama, Croatia, and England in the group stage.
Looking ahead, Ghana is scheduled to face Mexico and Wales in May for their final preparatory matches. The GFA is now under pressure to quickly appoint a successor and stabilize the team before the tournament.
