Ghana’s President, John Dramani Mahama, has been awarded the International Statesperson Award by the World Affairs Council of Philadelphia, honoring his significant contributions to global leadership, democratic governance, and international diplomacy.
The accolade, presented during a ceremony yesterday, is the highest distinction bestowed by the Council.

Established in 1973, the award is reserved for exceptional global leaders whose efforts promote peace, freedom, and leave a lasting mark on international relations.
President Mahama’s recognition represents a historic achievement, as he becomes the first African leader to receive this esteemed honor since its inception.
In her remarks at the event, Lauren Swartz, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Council, lauded President Mahama’s leadership record, emphasizing that his career embodies the core principles the award aims to celebrate.
She emphasized his unwavering dedication to democratic governance, his role in facilitating peaceful political transitions, and his initiatives to enhance international collaborations and promote economic and regional development. Additionally, she praised his advocacy for Africa on the global stage.
During his acceptance speech, President Mahama credited his commitment to global peace and development to the enduring legacy of Africa’s trailblazing leaders, such as Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, Nelson Mandela, and Kenneth Kaunda.
