FIFA in a statement yesterday, imposed a fine of 150,000 Swiss Francs (£141,700) on the Israel Football Association (IFA) following an investigation into allegations of discrimination. The ruling comes after a complaint filed by the Palestine Football Association (PFA) during the 74th FIFA Congress in May 2024.
The FIFA Disciplinary Committee concluded that the IFA violated articles 13 and 15 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, which pertain to offensive behavior, violations of fair play principles, and discrimination and racist abuse. In addition to the financial penalty, FIFA has issued a formal warning regarding the IFA’s future conduct.
As part of the ruling, FIFA has mandated that the IFA display a prominent banner reading “Football Unites the World – No to Discrimination” alongside its logo during its next three home matches. The specifications for the banner’s size, layout, and positioning must be submitted to FIFA for approval at least 15 days before each match.
Furthermore, the IFA is required to allocate one-third of the fine towards executing a detailed plan aimed at fighting discrimination and avoiding future incidents. FIFA stated that the decision could be subject to appeal by the Israel Football Association.
In addition to the discrimination allegations, the Palestine FA claimed that the IFA was permitting football teams from Palestinian territories to participate in its national league. However, FIFA stated it would take no action on this matter, referencing the unresolved legal status of the West Bank under public international law.
In related news, the Palestine Football Association announced the cancellation of its national team’s friendly matches against Mauritania and Benin in Morocco later this month due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
