Richard Worley, the Police Commissioner of the Baltimore Police Department (BPD), said a suspect is dead and a Baltimore police officer was injured after a burglary call escalated into a hostage standoff at a home in the Glen neighborhood yesterday morning.
Officers responded to a home in the 6200 block of Park Heights Avenue around 11:50 a.m., where they were met with gunfire from a suspect inside the house, Worley added.
Police officers took cover after one officer was shot in the leg but were able to apply a tourniquet at the scene. The injured officer was later taken to a Shock Trauma Center, where Brandon Scott said he is in “great spirits.”
According to Richard Worley, the officer is 36 years old and has served with the Baltimore Police Department for 13 years. Thomas Scalea of the Shock Trauma Center praised the officer’s colleague for quickly applying a tourniquet at the scene. “He is awake, stable, and currently undergoing evaluation,” he said.
Richard Worley explained that the suspect was holding a hostage and appeared at a window several times with a gun pointed at the person’s head before he was ultimately shot. Officials said a woman who jumped from a window while trying to escape was also taken to a nearby hospital.
A Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team arrived on the scene, and a sniper officer “neutralized” the suspect. Richard Worley confirmed the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene, and a firearm was recovered from the home.
Police said the suspect and the victims were related in some way and are continuing to investigate what led to the incident.
