Two sisters, Frantzia and Pojanee Fleury, sadly passed away while trying to save their father, who has a disability, during a Thanksgiving house fire in Orange, New Jersey. The blaze killed them while seven others, including their dad, escaped safely.

According to People, the fire broke out around 5 p.m. Thursday at a home on Mosswood Avenue. Frantzia, 49, and Pojanee, 42, rushed to help their father as flames quickly spread through the house. Emergency responders pronounced both sisters dead at the scene.

Their father and six other people made it out without injuries. Officials from the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office said the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Pojanee Fleury founded Brown Eyez Magazine in 2007, a community publication focused on African-American art, culture, and holistic health. Frantzia worked as a radiologic technologist at Clara Maass Medical Center in New Jersey.

A neighbor described the incident as “heartbreaking, and on Thanksgiving, that’s hard. That’s really hard.” The tragedy has left the community in shock, mourning the loss of two sisters who put family first.

Authorities are asking anyone with information about the fire to contact the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.
