Father Arrested For Allegedly Beating 13-Year-Old Daughter To Death Over Food

A 54-year-old mason, Isaac Adonteng, has been arrested by the Weija Divisional Police Command for allegedly beating his 13-year-old daughter, Celestine Adonteng, to death at Kokrobite.

According to an official statement from the Accra Regional Police Command dated Thursday, 20 November, and signed by Superintendent Juliana Obeng, the father allegedly assaulted the girl with a cane, a metal pipe, and other objects after accusing her of taking food intended for her younger sibling.

“Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect physically assaulted the victim with a cane, a metal pipe and other objects,” the statement said.

Despite sustaining multiple injuries, the victim was reportedly kept confined in a room, and the suspect failed to seek medical attention. Police officers, acting on a complaint, visited the residence and found the girl unconscious. “She was rushed to the Police Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival,” the statement noted. Her body has been deposited at the Police Hospital morgue for preservation and autopsy.

A cutlass and a metal pipe were retrieved from the scene as exhibits believed to have been used in the assault. The police disclosed that Mr Adonteng is now in custody to assist with ongoing investigations.

The statement also cautioned parents and guardians against excessive force in disciplining children:

“ The Accra Regional Police Command strongly warns against the use of excessive force in correcting children, as such actions are unlawful and can lead to tragic outcomes.”

Authorities further urged the public to report any form of child abuse or domestic violence for prompt intervention and protection of victims.
