Kelis shared how moving from the U.S. to Kenya with her three children has transformed her life. The artist spoke about her new farm life, the country’s beauty, and the lessons she’s learned while adapting to a slower, more grounded lifestyle.
In a series of Instagram videos, the “Milkshake” hitmaker gave fans a glimpse into her journey in East Africa. She highlighted Kenya’s vibrant wildlife, stunning landscapes, and impressive growth since her move.
“You see it’s progressing,” Kelis said, explaining that modern conveniences like Amazon, Uber, and Uber Eats make daily life smoother. She added that Kenya’s ongoing development makes it a “livable” place, as reported by Vibe.
The singer also praised the kindness and warmth of the Kenyan people. “The people here are really friendly, they’re just good people,” she shared. Although she’s still working on practical matters like health insurance, Kelis expressed gratitude for the country’s healthcare system and strong sense of community.
Kelis acknowledged that rural living has its challenges. She mentioned dealing with rough terrain, flooding caused by poor drainage, and limited waste management. “If you want to live here like an American, it’s definitely going to cost you triple the price,” she said, noting how maintaining a Western lifestyle can be expensive.
Even with those hurdles, Kelis said she feels at peace in her new surroundings, describing Kenya as “one of the best countries on the continent.”
Now settled with her three children — Knight, 16, her son with rapper Nas, and her two younger kids, Shepherd, 9, and Galilee, 5, from her late husband Mike Mora — Kelis continues to embrace a simple, sustainable life rooted in nature and community.
