Ghana Airways is expected to resume operations in 2027 as the government intensifies efforts to revive the country’s defunct national carrier.
Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa disclosed that the President of the Republic of Ghana, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama had established a technical committee to develop a roadmap for restoring the airline.
The team has reportedly completed its assignment and submitted its findings.
According to Mr Ablakwa, the President has also engaged executives of American aircraft manufacturer Boeing to discuss the proposed aviation project.

He indicated that the administration was working towards reintroducing the carrier by 2027, more than 20 years after its collapse.
Mr Ablakwa further revealed that direct flights between Ghana and Canada were being considered a major priority under the initiative.
The proposed service is expected to ease international travel for Ghanaians residing in Canada while promoting trade, tourism and diplomatic cooperation.
The minister noted that the connection would strengthen links between the two nations and provide improved access for members of the Ghanaian diaspora.
In March 2025, Accra and Ottawa signed their first air transport agreement, permitting multiple airlines from both countries to operate scheduled passenger and freight services.
Ghana Airways halted its operations in July 2004 following persistent financial difficulties and accumulated debts.
A successor, Ghana International Airlines, was subsequently established but also folded in 2010.
