Nigeria has introduced a nationwide digital postcode programme aimed at giving every identifiable building a distinct location code and reducing losses caused by inaccurate addressing.
The National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System, rolled out through the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST), is expected to provide homes, businesses and other structures with unique codes connected to their geographical positions.
Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, said the initiative would address longstanding difficulties in identifying the exact locations of people, companies and public facilities.
He explained that reliable location information was essential for effective deliveries, emergency operations, security, financial services, commercial activities and government planning.
According to the government, inadequate addressing currently contributes to annual losses estimated at between N50 billion and N80 billion through unsuccessful deliveries, additional journeys and increased transportation expenses.
The new system is expected to strengthen Nigeria’s growing e-commerce and logistics sectors by giving service providers a common and dependable reference for locating customers.
Small enterprises could also benefit by using the codes to reach clients beyond their immediate communities, while emergency agencies could more easily identify properties during urgent situations.
The Communications Ministry has described the initiative as an important component of Nigeria’s Digital Public Infrastructure, with possible uses across public safety, security, commerce, logistics and emergency services.
The programme also supports the government’s broader objective of developing a $1 trillion economy by expanding digital infrastructure and enabling more citizens and enterprises to participate in online commerce.
However, widespread adoption remains crucial to the success of the project.
Its effectiveness will depend on logistics operators, online marketplaces, banks, public institutions and other organisations integrating the new codes into their systems.
Mr Tijani has encouraged Nigerians to obtain their individual postcodes, keep them safely and use them when providing their addresses.
The codes are available through NIPOST’s digital postcode platform as the government begins efforts to make the system part of everyday transactions and location services.
