The English Football Association (FA) is reportedly preparing to end its endorsement of FIFA President Gianni Infantino, intensifying growing resistance to his leadership after a disputed commercial reform was shelved.
The anticipated decision follows increasing dissatisfaction among football authorities worldwide over a proposal that would have allowed private investors to acquire minority interests in FIFA’s most valuable competitions through a newly established commercial structure.
Earlier, the Football Association of Wales (FAW) confirmed it had withdrawn its support for Infantino’s expected re-election campaign, signalling widening opposition within the football community ahead of the next FIFA presidential contest in 2027.
At the centre of the dispute was FIFA’s plan to establish FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE), a separate commercial company that would oversee the marketing and business operations of major tournaments, including the FIFA World Cup.
Although FIFA maintained that outside investors would not obtain controlling ownership, the initiative faced strong resistance.
Critics argued that introducing external investment into FIFA’s commercial activities could weaken transparency, reduce institutional independence and reshape the governance of the world’s governing football body.
Regional football confederations, including UEFA and CONCACAF, have publicly questioned both the proposal and the manner in which it was developed, raising concerns over the organisation’s leadership and decision-making processes.
Pressure on Infantino has continued to mount, with UEFA reportedly examining legal avenues in response to the abandoned restructuring plan.
According to The Telegraph, the European football governing body has formally notified FIFA that it is assessing options including litigation, arbitration and regulatory complaints relating to the proposed commercial entity.
UEFA also requested that FIFA retain every document, electronic record and communication connected to the initiative, stressing that such material must be preserved regardless of existing document destruction or retention policies.
Should the English FA formally withdraw its endorsement, it would mark another significant blow to Infantino’s standing as debate over FIFA’s governance intensifies ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
