Polish authorities are investigating the crash of what is believed to be a Russian cruise missile after debris struck farmland in the country’s eastern region during a large overnight bombardment targeting Ukraine.
Prime Minister Donald Tusk said preliminary assessments strongly suggest the object was a Russian Kh-101 cruise missile.
Speaking after an emergency security meeting in Lublin and later visiting the impact site, he stated that military specialists examining the recovered wreckage believe most of the fragments are consistent with that type of weapon.
The explosion left a crater measuring about 10 metres across in a field near the village of Tarnawa Kolonia, roughly 100 kilometres from the Ukrainian border.
No injuries or fatalities were reported, as the missile landed away from residential communities.
Tusk stressed that the incident was being treated with utmost seriousness despite the absence of casualties.
He noted that Poland’s armed forces had been ready to destroy the projectile if it had continued deeper into the country’s territory.
Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz disclosed that military surveillance tracked around 20 aerial objects approaching Polish airspace during the night.
He added that forensic and explosive-material examinations were underway to establish the missile’s origin with certainty.
Ukraine’s acting Foreign Minister, Andriy Sybiha, maintained that the weapon entered Polish territory during Russia’s large-scale missile campaign against Ukraine, describing the incident as a violation of NATO airspace.
The development prompted consultations between Warsaw and its European partners.
Tusk confirmed he had spoken with several European leaders, while European Council President António Costa said the latest Russian offensive once again demonstrated that Moscow’s military actions threaten the wider security of Europe.
The missile incident occurred as Russia launched extensive strikes across several Ukrainian cities, including Kyiv, Lviv and areas around Kryvyi Rih.
Ukrainian officials said at least eight people lost their lives, among them six members of the same family in a village near Kryvyi Rih, while dozens of others sustained injuries in different parts of the country.
Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022, several Russian drones and missiles have crossed into Polish territory.
In November 2022, two Polish farmers were killed near the border after a missile landed in the area, though investigators later concluded it was most likely a Ukrainian air defence missile fired in response to a Russian attack.
According to Poland’s military, radar detected Thursday’s object at approximately 03:40 local time.
An F-16 fighter aircraft was dispatched to intercept it before contact was lost.
A military helicopter later joined search operations, leading to the discovery of the impact site.
Residents in the surrounding area reported hearing a powerful explosion shortly before dawn, while air raid sirens sounded in parts of eastern Poland, including Lublin and Krasnystaw, as neighbouring Ukraine came under heavy aerial bombardment.
The incident came just hours after President Volodymyr Zelensky met Prime Minister Tusk in Lublin following discussions with United States President Donald Trump.
