In a stunning ascent, Ghanaian goalkeeper Benjamin Asare has been recognized as one of the top 10 goalkeepers at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, having started the tournament as the third-choice keeper for the Black Stars.
Asare was called into action when Lawrence Ati-Zigi sustained an injury during halftime in Ghana’s Group L clash against Panama. Seizing this unexpected opportunity, Asare has made history by becoming the first goalkeeper for the Black Stars to achieve consecutive clean sheets in World Cup matches. He continued to impress with solid performances against both England and Croatia.
His remarkable efforts have earned him a spot in the latest official World Cup goalkeeper rankings, where he holds the sixth position with a rating of 7.61, a notable rise from his earlier score of 5.53.
Asare’s ranking places him among an elite group of goalkeepers, led by Paraguay’s Orlando Gill, who is in first place with a rating of 8.10. Following him are Switzerland’s Gregor Kobel with a score of 8.05 and Iran’s Alireza Beiranvand in third with 7.81.
The Ghanaian keeper’s performance has outshone several renowned international players, including England’s Jordan Pickford, who ranks tenth with a rating of 7.38.
This achievement marks an incredible turnaround for Asare, who was not anticipated to play a significant role in Ghana’s World Cup journey. His rise has been propelled by a series of critical saves, including a vital stop against Croatia in Ghana’s final group-stage match. Despite the Black Stars losing 2-1, thanks to Derrick Luckassen’s equalizer, Asare received a match rating of 7/10 for his efforts.
As the tournament progresses into the knockout stages, Asare’s performances have solidified his status as one of the standout goalkeepers at the 2026 FIFA World Cup and a key success story for Ghana in this competition.
