Sir Keir Starmer has announced his resignation as Prime Minister and leader of the Labour Party, succumbing to escalating pressure from within his party ahead of the upcoming general election.

‎In a statement delivered outside 10 Downing Street on Monday, June 22, Starmer acknowledged the sentiments of his parliamentary colleagues after months of internal discussions regarding his capability to continue at the helm of Labour.

‎“I have listened to the response of my parliamentary party regarding my leadership.

‎I accept that decision with humility,” he remarked.

‎Starmer emphasized that every choice made during his leadership was motivated by a commitment to the nation.

‎“All my decisions have prioritized the country I cherish,” he asserted.

‎He confirmed that he had informed King Charles III about his resignation and would commence the official process for electing a new leader for the Labour Party.

‎“This morning, I spoke with His Majesty the King to convey my decision,” he stated.

‎Starmer noted that the Labour Party’s National Executive Committee would announce a schedule for the leadership election, with nominations anticipated to open on July 9 and conclude before Parliament’s summer break.

‎His resignation follows less than two years after he successfully led Labour to a significant electoral victory, ending 14 years of Conservative governance in the UK.

‎However, his leadership faced mounting scrutiny recently, with reports indicating internal conflicts within the party and rising apprehensions among some MPs regarding Labour’s trajectory and electoral viability.

‎Sources within the party are expected to initiate discussions concerning the succession process in the coming days.
