A devastating explosion at a coal mine in Sutatausa, located north of the capital, Bogotá, has resulted in the deaths of nine individuals, marking yet another tragic event in the nation’s mining industry.

‎Emergency responders reported that six miners were successfully rescued from the mine shafts following the incident, which occurred around 16:00 local time (21:00 GMT) yesterday.

‎The National Mining Agency of Colombia indicated that a build-up of gases is believed to be the cause of the explosion.

‎Just weeks prior, the agency had conducted an inspection and issued a series of recommendations to the mine’s operators, highlighting concerns about a “potentially hazardous gas accumulation.”

‎Many mining operations in Colombia are conducted informally and often lack adequate safety measures.

‎Álvaro Farfán, Captain of the Regional Fire Department, stated that rescue teams are continuing their efforts to recover the bodies of the deceased miners.

‎The survivors are currently receiving medical treatment in local hospitals.

‎Mining disasters are not uncommon in Colombia. In July of last year, 18 workers were rescued from an unlicensed gold mine after being trapped underground for 18 hours due to equipment failure.

‎Earlier this year, Sutatausa experienced one of its deadliest incidents when 21 people lost their lives in a blast attributed to methane gas accumulation within the tunnels of a coal mining complex.

‎Sutatausa has been a hub for coal mining for decades, with many residents relying on the industry for their livelihoods.
