The Government of Ghana has issued a strong condemnation of the recent coordinated terrorist assaults in Mali, which reportedly led to the death of the country’s Defence Minister, General Sadio Camara.
In light of these events, Ghanaian traders and drivers are being urged to refrain from traveling to Mali until further notice.
In a statement released today, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed its solidarity with the Malian government and its citizens following the violent attacks on various military installations, including sites in the capital, Bamako.
“Violent extremism must not be tolerated in our world; we must enhance our collective efforts to eradicate this menace,” the statement emphasized.
The attacks targeted several key locations and resulted in numerous casualties among both military personnel and civilians. General Camara, a pivotal figure in Mali’s military framework, was reportedly among those who lost their lives.
The incident marks one of the most significant security challenges in the Sahel region in recent months, where extremist factions affiliated with al-Qaeda and ISIS continue to thrive amid ongoing political turmoil.
In response to the escalating security concerns, the Foreign Ministry has specifically instructed Ghanaian traders and transport operators who frequently travel through Mali to suspend their activities for the time being.
“As the Malian government implements necessary measures to address the situation, Ghanaian traders and drivers engaged in cross-border trade are advised to halt their movements until further notice,” the ministry stated.
Additionally, Ghanaians currently residing in Mali are urged to exercise increased vigilance, avoid unnecessary travel, and maintain close communication with the Ghanaian Embassy in Bamako.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reiterated its commitment to closely monitoring developments in Mali and collaborating with local authorities to ensure the safety of Ghanaian nationals.
Updates will be provided as the situation progresses and conditions improve for the resumption of cross-border commercial activities.
The government reaffirmed its dedication to safeguarding its citizens abroad, stating that “the security, safety, and well-being of our citizens remain our top priority.”
