Gabrielle Union’s father, Sylvester “Cully” Union Jr., has died at 81 after a long battle with dementia. She confirmed his death through an Instagram tribute, noting he had been placed in memory care in 2023 following his diagnosis.

Gabrielle said he died on Friday, April 3, after a steady decline in health in recent years. She previously spoke about how dementia slowly changed his condition and eventually required full-time care.

“No matter how much you think you know about dementia, nothing prepares you for the painfully slow disappearing of your loved one,” Gabrielle said, according to People. “First it’s repeating words or forgetting little things here or there, then BOOM, he can’t swallow or walk.”

Gabrielle described her dad as a warm, outgoing man who loved people and lived with a strong sense of connection. He never met a stranger, enjoyed music and travel, and stayed loyal to Nebraska football throughout his life.

She also reflected on him as a father who valued accountability and relationships. She said he faced his flaws, worked to make amends, and made sure the people around him felt included and seen.

Gabrielle thanked the caregivers, medical staff, and family members who supported him during his final years. She especially credited her sisters for stepping up and helping ensure he received consistent care.

She spoke openly about the emotional impact of losing a parent after a long illness. She described feeling both relief that his suffering had ended and deep grief over his death, while also extending support to others facing similar loss.

Her Instagram post included clips of Sylvester singing, cheering at football games, and spending time with family. Friends and colleagues filled the comments with condolences, remembering his kindness and upbeat personality. Gabrielle had also shared earlier birthday posts, showing how closely the family stayed connected throughout his illness.
