The interior minister of Comoros, Mohamed Ahamada, during a news conference reported that at least seventeen dead had been retrieved from a boat that was discovered on the coast of Comoros carrying African migrants.
According to him, nine dead had been found early on Thursday, in addition to eight that had been found overnight.
Ahamada stated that thirty persons aboard the boat had made it out alive and revealed that the majority of the migrants were from the Congo.
A local hospital director further explained that the ship was found late on Wednesday when inhabitants of the seaside hamlet of Mitsamiouli heard pleas for assistance and notified the authorities.
The hospital’s director reported that survivors claimed to be from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, adding that the death toll was eighteen.
