Dr. Edwin Moses, Olympic Gold medalist and Board Member for Sports Equity Lab (SEL), has landed in Ghana to lend his support to the ‘Victory in Unity’ campaign, which aims to celebrate six iconic sports personalities hailed as African giants.

This initiative, led by Sports Equity Lab (SEL) with backing from the African Union Sports Council, Ghana’s Ministry of Youth and Sports, and Swiss Sportswear Company, ON, is set to be unveiled at the University of Ghana Stadium on Thursday, March 7th, 2024.

Speaking to the press at Kotoka International Airport upon his arrival in Ghana, Dr. Moses revealed that his visit was not merely happenstance; rather, he had undertaken a DNA test confirming his partial Ghanaian heritage.

His presence in Ghana is not only in solidarity with the 13th African Games but also to champion the values upheld by Sports Equity Lab, namely equity, inclusivity, and decency in sports. Dr. Moses also called upon sport’s governing bodies and confederations to prioritize fair compensation for athletes who significantly contribute to the success of sports.

In a poignant message, he urged Black Americans in Western societies to reconnect with their ancestral roots to rediscover their identities.

Professor Dr. Yetsa Tuakli-Wosornu, the Founder of Sports Equity Lab, emphasized that the organization is dedicated to promoting social justice and inclusion in sports. She stated, “Our goal is to create equity and social justice in the sports field. We have done the events in Ghana and each time we come, it has gotten bigger and bigger.”

Professor Wosornu stressed the importance of using sports as a platform to uphold human rights and address societal inequalities.

Among the distinguished icons to be honored are trailblazers such as Feryal Abdelaziz, the first female Egyptian karateka to secure Olympic gold; Raphael Botsyo Nkegbe, the inaugural Ghanaian Paralympian to qualify for the 2020 Paralympics; Noemi Alphonse, the pioneer Mauritian para-athlete to reach a Paralympic Games final; and Mpumelelo Mhlongo, a decorated Paralympic Games medalist.

Also featured are Hellen Obiri, the sole woman to clinch world titles in indoor track, outdoor track, and cross country, alongside Abedi Ayew Pele, hailed as one of the footballing greats of all time.
