Jasmine Crockett, an African American congresswoman in Texas, pushed back against President Trump after he called her “low IQ.” She urged Americans not to give in to intimidation, warning that democracy is at risk if people give in to threats.
Trump’s comment came from the Oval Office as his administration announced the indictment of former FBI Director James Comey. He also signaled plans to target Democratic donor George Soros and other party members.
Speaking on MSNBC, Crockett said, “When you stand up to a bully, you win. Do not back down. Do not bend. You allow them to go and wage their threats.” She added that Trump’s approach seeks to weaken democracy, and warned that some of his supporters agree with this direction.
The Texas Democrat also criticized members of Trump’s administration, saying they either ignore or misuse the law. She pointed to Attorney General Pam Bondi, who faced backlash for controversial statements on prosecuting hate speech and her involvement in Comey’s indictment.
Democrats beyond Texas voiced concerns as well. Sen. Tim Kaine of Virginia said Bondi’s handling of the case looked like a “political hatchet job.” Drawing on his legal experience in Virginia, he predicted the courts would not treat the indictment as credible.
Crockett insisted Comey has strong legal ground to fight the charges. “If he [Trump] decides that he wants to continue down this path, I think that they’re going to continue to lose,” she said, adding that Comey is unlikely to accept a plea deal and will fight the case to the end.
She also questioned the administration’s ability to move forward with the prosecution, suggesting they may struggle more to find someone willing to prosecute than Comey will in finding a defense.
