Mojtaba Khamenei Becomes The Supreme Leader Of Iran

Mojtaba Khamenei, the second son of former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was appointed as Iran’s new Supreme Leader on Sunday, following his father’s death in U.S.-Israeli airstrikes that happened on 28th February, 2026. The move made by the 88- member Assembly of Experts has raised concerns among many Iranians who feared the establishment of a dynastic leadership within the regime.

‎Mojtaba’s appointment, which comes after years of speculation regarding his potential succession, signals a deliberate act of defiance against external pressures, particularly from the United States.

‎The new leadership appears committed to continuing the hardline policies championed by his father, betting that consolidating power around the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) will help the regime withstand future challenges.

‎Before news of his ascension could fully circulate amid an ongoing internet and communications blackout in Iran, state media began crafting Mojtaba’s public image.

‎Within hours of his appointment as Iran’s third Supreme Leader, a four-minute documentary was released, detailing his modest origins, religious studies, and notable experiences on the front lines during the Iran-Iraq War at the age of 17. The documentary aimed to position him as the rightful heir to the “martyred leader,” showcasing his political and religious credentials.

‎Although Mojtaba Khamenei has maintained a low profile over the years, he has been a significant figure behind the scenes within his father’s administration and has cultivated strong ties with the IRGC and the economic networks that sustain the Islamic Republic.

‎Following his appointment, a wave of pledges of allegiance have poured in from key institutions, including the Presidency, Parliament and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
