The Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ghana, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has made a landmark official visit to Kyrgyzstan, becoming the first African foreign minister to be formally received by the Central Asian nation.
The visit yesterday signifies a pivotal diplomatic milestone, with both governments pledging to enhance political and economic integration.
During discussions in Bishkek with the President of Kyrgyzstan, Sadyr Japarov and Foreign Minister of Kyrgyzstan, Jeenbek Kulubayev, both sides established a framework for strategic cooperation encompassing trade, mining, and diplomatic relations.
“We made history today as Ghana became the first African country whose foreign minister has been hosted on an official visit in Kyrgyzstan,” stated Ablakwa.

The trip reflects Ghana’s promise to expanding its diplomatic and economic horizons beyond traditional partnerships. A significant outcome of the visit was the signing of two bilateral agreements aimed at officializing their relationship.
The first agreement facilitates visa waivers for holders of diplomatic and service passports from both nations, with ongoing discussions to potentially extend this arrangement to ordinary passport holders in the future. Additionally, both countries agreed to create an avenue for regular political consultations between their foreign ministries.
These agreements are intended to enhance partnership and establish a formal dialogue structure regarding trade and international affairs. Economic alliance, particularly in the gold sector, was a key focus during discussions. Ghana is Africa’s leading gold producer, while Kyrgyzstan is home to one of Central Asia’s largest mining activities at the Kumtor gold mine.
“With Ghana as Africa’s leading gold producer and Kyrgyzstan hosting the renowned Kumtor Gold Mines, we see immense potential for a mutually beneficial partnership in the mining sector,” said Ablakwa. “Our teamwork will aim to share expertise and unlock new opportunities for both economies.”

The visit also underscores Ghana’s broader strategy to diversify its trade relationships and engage with emerging markets. Kyrgyzstan has demonstrated notable economic growth in recent years, making it an appealing partner for expanding commercial ties.
“We are particularly interested in exploring diversified markets for Ghana’s growing economy. Kyrgyzstan’s recent economic performance and strategic position in Central Asia make it an important partner for the future,” he emphasized.
This engagement occurs as Kyrgyzstan seeks to strengthen ties with African nations following its recent recognition as an observer to the African Union. The visit represents a step toward broader south-south cooperation that connects African and Central Asian economies.
Future engagements will concentrate on trade missions, mining collaborations, and expanded people-to-people exchanges as Ghana and Kyrgyzstan work to translate these new agreements into tangible economic benefits.
