Spanish Woman Ends Life Via Euthanasia Amid Dad’s Legal Struggle

‎A Spanish woman who engaged in a prolonged legal struggle with her father for the right to end her life underwent euthanasia yesterday.

‎Noelia Castillo, a 25-year-old national of Barcelona, became paraplegic after sustaining injuries while attempting to take her own life in 2022.

‎In the summer of 2024, the Catalan government approved her request for assisted dying, but the process was halted at the last minute due to legal challenges raised by her father, supported by the conservative group Abogados Cristianos (Christian Lawyers).

‎He contended that his daughter was suffering from a personality disorder that impaired her judgment. He also emphasized “the duty of the state to safeguard the lives of individuals, particularly those who are weak, such as a young person with mental health issues.”

‎The appeal initiated an 18-month legal battle that concluded when the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) ruled in favor of Noelia Castillo.

‎Yesterday, the Abogados Cristianos declared via X that Castillo had died through euthanasia. The organization stated that her case “highlights significant shortcomings” in Spain’s euthanasia legislation.

‎In an interview with Spanish television earlier this week, Castillo expressed that her father had attempted to legally obstruct her choice to die with dignity. “He has never respected my decision and likely never will,” she remarked.

‎She also shared her challenging upbringing, much of which was spent in care facilities. She recounted being sexually assaulted by her ex-boyfriend after taking sleeping pills and experiencing another assault by multiple men at a nightclub.

‎The 25-year-old stated she had always felt isolated and had never wavered in her desire to proceed with euthanasia. “No one in my family supports my choice,” she said. “I am leaving while you all remain here with your pain, but what about the suffering I have endured over the years? I just want to find peace and end the pain.”

‎”The happiness of a father, mother, or sister shouldn’t take precedence over a daughter’s happiness,” she added.

‎While her family would have the opportunity to say their goodbyes, Noelia indicated she preferred to be alone with her doctor during the administration of the lethal injection.

‎Her mother, Yolanda, expressed that she did not agree with her daughter’s choice but “respected” it nonetheless.

‎Spain’s euthanasia law came into effect in 2021. According to government statistics, 426 requests for assisted dying were approved in 2024, the latest year for which data is available. Noelia’s case marked the first instance where a judge was called upon to make a decision regarding such matters.
