South Africa Police Detain Son Of Late Zimbabwe Leader

The youngest son of Robert Mugabe has been arrested in South Africa following a shooting at a private home in Johannesburg.

Police say Bellarmine Mugabe, 28, is being held on suspicion of attempted murder. A 23-year-old man was shot during the incident and is now in hospital in critical condition. The man is believed to be a gardener working at the property.

The shooting happened in Hyde Park, an affluent suburb of the city. Police officers searched the house and found spent bullet cartridges. They did not recover a firearm.

Speaking at the scene, police spokesperson Col Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said the suspects have not helped investigators locate the weapon. She told reporters: “told us where the gun is, they are not saying anything about the gun”.

Another man was arrested together with Mugabe. Police say both suspects are expected to appear in court soon as investigations continue.

Authorities have not formally named Mugabe as one of those arrested. However, journalists at the property saw him in handcuffs, and several South African media outlets have identified him.

Bellarmine Mugabe is the youngest child of the late Zimbabwean leader and Grace Mugabe. His father led Zimbabwe for nearly four decades before he was removed from office in 2017. He died in 2019.

Police say the investigation remains ongoing as they work to establish the full details of the case.
