Queen Latifah joined “The Jennifer Hudson Show” this week, so of course there was a flawless spirit tunnel walk! Once on Jennifer Hudson’s couch, the delightful superstar told a story of how Patti LaBelle kept her in the industry in a time she was considering walking away.
Latifah told J Hud, “There’s always people along the way who help you and I think that Patti LaBelle was one of those people that helped me actually stay in the business.” She said that being raised by a lot of strong women helped her face the world with power, but things took a bit of a turn when she lost her brother Lancelot in 1992 to a motorcycle crash — a motorcycle that she purchased for him.
She continued, “I’m sure you can imagine how this can be when someone is like, ‘Queen Latifah, I heard about your brother. Can I get an autograph?’ I’m like same sentence? What?! And I was like, ‘Y’all don’t really know how I feel. Y’all don’t care.’ And I was about to walk away from it for a second, and Patti was one of those people who had talked to me and who had been through things like that and was like, ‘Listen. Don’t give up. You just keep staying on your path. You’re going to get through this.’”
Latifah also said fellow rapper/actor and late icon, Heavy D, also helped her through her pain and desire to quit. “He had gone through things with his brothers,” she explained. “They’re always these people along the way who get put in your path, and it’s just a trip how it happens. So you just have to stay on the journey.”
Then Latifah also chatted about the time she spent with Megan Thee Stallion, eating escargot, and performing with her at Coachella.
Latifah, whose real name is Dana Owens, put on her hosting hat and asked Hudson about her releasing new music and possibly breaking into song right on the spot. “You know I keep a mic under my chair!” Hudson joked. “The Queen is hype!” Owens shouted, while the crowd erupted. They were ready for a musical moment, but Hudson had a million more questions for Latifah, because who wouldn’t?
They got into Latifah’s favorite movie of her own — she’s been in over 60, but there’s one that takes the cake. “I think ‘Last Holiday’ is absolutely one of my favorite movies,” she said. “Sometimes you get to do something that helps you live your life right. ‘Last Holiday’ was about living life to the fullest, and I really needed to live my life as if it was my last day. There’s just something that shifts in you when you’re doing that.”
