Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni will visit Algeria on Wednesday in an effort to negotiate alternate gas supply in the face of protracted delays in Qatari delivery, according to the prime minister’s office.

Energy Minister Gilberto Pichetto Fratin stated on Friday that Algeria is one of the nation’s Italy is negotiating with to ensure gas supply after Iranian strikes on Qatar seemed to have stopped its exports for a considerable amount of time.

After the Iranian assaults, Qatar informed Italian customer Edison that it would not be able to complete its contractual responsibilities for April. Previously, Qatar covered about 10% of Italy’s usage.

According to QatarEnergy’s CEO, the supply halt is probably going to endure longer because gas infrastructure was severely damaged last week.

Eni, a state-owned energy company with long-term agreements with Algeria, reported on Friday that it was getting quantities within the parameters of its current contracts.

In July 2025, Meloni met the president of Algeria in Rome at the signing of a number of economic agreements in the telecoms and energy industries.
