His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, President of the Republic of Ghana, has welcomed 54 personnel from the Ghana Armed Forces upon their return from a humanitarian mission in Jamaica, which was initiated in response to the devastation caused by Hurricane Melissa.
During the welcome ceremony, President Mahama commended the troops for their efforts, emphasizing that their mission exemplified Ghana’s commitment to international cooperation beyond military engagements. He highlighted the significance of solidarity during times of crisis.
The President specifically praised the troops, primarily from the 14 Engineer Brigade, for their successful “non-combat, humanitarian mission,” which is rooted in shared Afro-Caribbean history and Pan-African solidarity.
The 54-member team, comprising personnel from the 48th, 49th, and 50th Engineer Regiments of the Ghana Armed Forces, collaborated closely with the Jamaica Defence Force’s 1 Engineer Regiment. Their tasks included repairing damaged public infrastructure and constructing temporary housing for residents displaced by the hurricane. They departed for Jamaica in December 2025.
Their efforts were particularly concentrated on roofing projects in St. Elizabeth Parish, specifically in the communities of Middle Quarters and Black River.
This deployment was made in response to a formal request from Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness, highlighting the strengthening ties between Ghana and Caribbean nations through practical collaboration and shared historical connections.
